Artificial color and flavor, preservatives, harmful pesticides, and other additives; these are the types of elements you won’t find at Mercado Agrícola Orgánico (Organic Agriculture Market.) Organized by Cooperativa Orgánica Madre Tierra, on the first Sunday of every month, people from all over the island gather in Hato Rey’s Placita Roosevelt to celebrate, discuss, sell, and purchase uncontaminated fruits of the Earth.

Medicinal plants and spices, fruits, vegetables, foods cultivated without poison, pastries, botanical oils, vegetarian cuisine, discussions, live music, books, vitamins, grains, nuts, and artisans is what one will encounter at the Organic Market on Sunday, Oct. 6. The vendors come from as far away as the foothills of El Yunque and the mountains of Barranquitas to display under colorful tents the vast array of organic munchies and offer services like massages.

Discussions regarding healthy nutrition and ecological consciousness are offered in the main tent and impromptu educational chats on how to plant harmoniously with nature can occur at anyone of the more than 20 kiosks.

Attendees of this organic event are firm believers and promoters of a lifestyle that is different from the consumerist one that permeates the island. This lifestyle emanates from a profoundly spiritual philosophy in which noncompetitiveness and solidarity are fundamentals. Furthermore, this solidarity is toward all of Earth’s life forms, which is compatible with their beliefs in conserving natural resources, recycling, and reducing the use of nonbiodegradable materials.

The mission of Cooperativa Orgánica Madre Tierra is to increase their brothers’ and sisters’ consciousness of the importance of cultivating the Earth with love and respect. For the most part, this organization unites people interested in connecting with the spirit of Mother Earth through the cultivation, marketing, and consumption of high-quality organic products that are free of contaminants and synthetics.

The next Organic Market will be Sunday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hato Rey’s Placita Roosevelt, which is near Roosevelt Theater. For more information, call Cooperativa Orgánica Madre Tierra at (787) 439-5034.
