Construction on the new Marshalls Megastore has already started, said Angelo Mercado, corporate affairs director for the company’s local operations. This will be the third Marshalls Megastore on the island, he said.

"What we are doing is expanding an existing Marshalls store in Carolina and converting it into a megastore. This store occupies about 30,000 square feet and will grow by about 10,000 square feet, for a total of 40,000 square feet," said Mercado.

The idea to make the conversion was prompted by the store’s popularity among local consumers. "We have seen very good sales at the store and our customers were asking for more," said Mercado.

Marshalls Megastores, explained Mercado, feature an expanded home department that includes not only accessories and housewares but also furniture lines. "We have seen a trend in growing sales for our home departments. This began even before 9/11," he said.

Marshalls is a subsidiary of the TJX Cos. The company has more than 575 stores in 37 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, where it opened in 1994. Today it has 13 stores on the island, each of which occupies an average of 30,000 square feet, and employs an estimated 500. The other two local megastores are in Bayamon and Caparra Heights.
